Texans release Ed Reed; place RB Arian Foster on IR
o yeah, the whole Ed Reed thing didn't really work out in Houston. The Texans released Reed Tuesday, the team announced. The future Hall of Fame safety spent his first 11 NFL seasons with the Ravens before signing a three-year, $15 million contract this offseason.
The Texans also placed running back Arian Foster on injured reserve. The move comes two days after CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported that Foster would undergo season-ending back surgery.
When the Texans signed Reed they were probably expecting something more than one of the league's worst safeties. But through nine games, that's exactly what they got. According tohttp://www.bglions.com/sports/football/, Reed ranked 73rd out of 85 players at the position.
A 2002 first-round pick out of Miami, Reed missed the first two games of the 2013 season recovering from a hip injury. In the seven games since, he had 16 tackles, no interceptions and didn't defend a single pass. Two weeks ago, he lost his starting job to Shiloh Keo.
Following Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, Reed was asked why Houston came up short again. The team was "outplayed and outcoached," he said.
The 35-year-old was set to make $4 million in 2014 and $5 million in 2015, which meant that his release was a matter of when not if.
Silver lining: Reed can now put that platinum walker to good use.
